Obituary

Richard Dean Orr, age 83, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Sylvia Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia, MO.

Richard "Red" was born on December 5, 1940 at the family farm in rural Floyd county, Iowa, the son of Harold and Gladys Orr. In 1954, the family moved to a farm in Franklin county, Iowa, where Red went to Oakland Township school in Popejoy, IA. It was there that he met his "one and only", Sheryl Neely, his freshman year of high school. On September 10, 1960, they were united in marriage and enjoyed 63 wonderful years. After they married, Red worked at Geneva Grain & Lumber before he found his first job in finance at Iowa Finance in Iowa Falls, IA. It was there that he discovered he had an acuity for numbers and began his long career in the finance industry. In 1967 he was transferred to Warrensburg, MO as a manager for AVCO Financial Services. In 1982 he landed his dream job at the Central Missouri Community Credit Union as a Vice President and later Chief Executive Officer. Red loved his job and working with people in the community where he never knew a stranger. He believed that everyone should have the opportunity to receive fair and equitable financial services and was the epitome of "truth in lending". He believed in the credit union philosophy and ideals and was a strong supporter of the credit union movement. During his 25 years at CMCCU, he served on the Missouri Corporate Credit Union Board, the Missouri League Board, and worked with the Missouri governmental committee making many trips to Washington DC to fight for legislation that supported credit unions. He also held office in the local chapter, the West Central Chapter of Credit Unions. He also was a member of the Housing Authority, the Rotary Club, and the Elks Lodge.

Red was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and devoted to his family. He attended sports events, dance recitals, and school events for all of his children and grandchildren. He made them all attend his "car care and maintenance class" when they got their first car. He loved being outside working on his yard, cutting wood for the fireplace in the winter, piddling with the cars, and building things out of wood. He was known to the neighborhood kids as making the best treehouse known to man. His family could always count on his homemade chicken and noodles for dinner and biscuits and gravy for breakfast when they came to visit. He was an extrovert with a good sense of humor and loved a good prank.

Red had a love for cars and travel. He enjoyed planning every detail of the yearly family "Griswold" vacations, usually to the national parks out west. However, his children and grandchildren were not fond leaving at 4 am as Red would announce in the hallway "Up and Adam – we're burning daylight!"  He especially loved the mountains of Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Red and Sheryl were active members of the Warrensburg Wheels Car Club. Red knew everything there was to know about cars, especially Fords! Of course, in his mind, Fords were the only classic car. His family would joke that he had motor oil coursing through his veins because he had such a love for cars. His favorite pastime was to have morning coffee with the guys at the car building while they solved the world's problems. He had the greatest enjoyment attending car cruises, car shows, and trips with the car club gang.

He is survived by his wife Sheryl; his daughter Linda Jochimsen (Scott) of O'Fallon, MO, and Rodney Orr (Emona) of Savannah, MO; his seven grandchildren Kaylen Ferry (Dylan), Andrew Jochimsen (Ashley), Aaron Jochimsen (Kayla), Chelsea Jochimsen, Harley Orr, Hunter Orr, and Fisher Orr; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Larry and Lois Neely, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Red was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Gladys (Varrelmann) Orr, his brother Harold Duane Orr, his sister Mavis Mutschler and brother-in-law Ed Mutschler, and his sister Marlene Schear and brother-in-law Mike Schear.

Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg with Rev. Sid Tiller officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Warrensburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
