Obituary

Harry "Lester" Lane, 93 of Knob Noster. MO passed away Monday, March 4, 2024 at his home.

Lester was born on February 21, 1931 at the family farm in Pettis County, the oldest son of Harry C. Lane and Annie Miardex Lane.  The family later moved to their forever farm in rural Knob Noster, where Lester could be seen riding his pony to the Woolery one room school house.  He later attended Knob Noster High School, graduating in 1948.  He met the love of his life and future bride Alice Peterman in High School.  After a few years of working the farm, in 1952, Lester was drafted into the Army.   After basic at Fort Leonard he was assigned to construction battalion at Beale AFB, CA.  His unit was deployed to Alaska to build hangars at Eielson AFB.  While on leave after this deployment Lester returned home to marry Alice Peterman on Oct 8, 1953.  Alice accompanied him back to Beale AFB, where he served the rest of his tour.  During his time in the service they met life-long friends Gladys and Wilbur Newendorp from Pella, Iowa.  The two families spent good times together making memories that last a life time.  Lester and Alice welcomed their daughter Margaret Ann in October of 1954.  After his discharge Lester and Alice returned to Knob Noster where Lester worked construction for a time.  Lester then teamed up with his brother-in-law, A.J. Peterman, to open a business in Knob Noster called KN Sales and Service.  The business had a store front on main street and the two tackled everything from new home and business construction to repair work on plumbing, electrical, HVAC and working on deep wells for farmers.  The two stayed in business until their retirement in 1998.

Lester was very devoted to his family, friends and community.  Anytime Margaret Ann was involved in softball, music performances or Girl Scouts he would be seen at the event.  The family was avid campers. Lester and Alice spent many years traveling with their various campers including becoming "Winter Texans" until health issues prevented the winter trips.  Lester took great pride in serving his community in voluntary roles.  Lester was a member of the First Christian Church for 76 years, where he served in many different leadership roles.  Lester was a member of the KN Lions Club for 59 years.  Lester served on the KN Cemetery board for 37 years, many of which he was the secretary.

Lester is survived by his wife of 70 years, Alice and his daughter Margaret Ann (Tom)Charrette. his sister, Joyce (Monty) Dixon,  brother-in-law Ed Smith, 3 nieces, 4 nephews including Scott (Tamie Jo) Peterman who have both been great support through the last 7 months and a very special great niece Madison Peterman.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Annie (Miardex) Lane, his brother, John, his sisters Dorothy Smith and Bessie Anita .

A special thanks to the hospice staff and the private caregivers for the last 7 months of care.
