Obituary

Kenneth W. Fowler, 79 of Warrensburg, Missouri passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at the Warrensburg Veterans Home.

Kenneth Wilson Fowler was born January 12, 1946 in Camden, New Jersey, the son of  Leon Frank Fowler and Alberta Geraldine (Whiley) Fowler. He graduated from high school in Pittman, NJ and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in History, with a minor in Geography from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg in 1974. He received his Masters Degree in History from UCM in 1978. Ken enlisted in the Air Force on February 3, 1966, and served during the Vietnam era. He was stationed at Whiteman AFB for 2 years and in the Philippines for 1 year.  He was Honorably Discharged on May 4, 1969, having achieved the rank of Sergeant (E-4). Ken served in the reserves until December 12, 1971. He was married to Leslie Marr from 1967 to 1994; Cindy Bridges from 1994 to 2007 and Sandra Edwards Anderson Fowler from 2007.

Ken managed the Pizza Hut in Warrensburg, for 3 years during the late 1960's. He was a manager of the book rental department, at UCM for 12 years. Ken was employed with Nazarene Publishing House in Kansas City as a Purchasing Agent for 3 years. More recently, Ken was a Purchasing manager with Tension Envelope for 20 years, retiring in 2009.

Ken was a reporter and writer for many dirt track car racing magazines, Vintage Oval Racing Magazine, Midwest State Racing News, Hawkeye Racing News and was well know around the local tracks for his straight forward articles.  He interviewed many drivers who later became NasCar drivers, (Carl Edwards).

He was a member of Fast Track Ministries, a Chaplain's group that attended dirt track races.  He handed out RACER'S PRAYER stickers for the drivers to put on the dashboard of their race cars. As a Chaplain, he prayed with those who asked and befriended many. Ken set up car shows in Independence, at the Noland Road Baptist Church and here at Grover Park Baptist Church, along with attending many car shows. On any given weekend, he and Sandy would travel to local dirt tracks so Ken could to his chaplain duties and gather information for his articles. This stopped when many of the local tracks closed.

Ken started his interest in car racing when his dad took him to the car races on weekends, when he was a kid.  His dad went to evangelize and man the pit gate. He took Ken along and it was about the only time they spent together. His dad would take him out to eat and buy him popcorn and set him down to watch the races then went about his business at the track. He had a heart for the lost and never failed to leave a track with his tip at any restaurant he frequented. Ken also loved to read, overcoming dyslexia and very poor eyesight. He read very slowly, but could tell you anything he read, almost like he memorized the book.  He read biographies and Christian books and never read fiction.
