Obituary

Harold Edward "Ed" Woodrel loving father, husband and friend passed peacefully on December 17, 2022.  He was a former owner of Sweeney-Phillips Funeral Home from 1967 until 1986 and actively involved in community activities in Warrensburg. Although the Corner Café closed many years ago, he would still mention how much he missed their cinnamon rolls.

The son of Earl and Anna Elizabeth Woodrel, he was born in Olathe, Colorado, December 23, 1925. He graduated from high school in West Plains, Missouri, served in the Navy on the USS Bandera in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946, and graduated from the St. Louis School of Mortuary Science in 1948. He moved to Independence in 1950 where he began his career and met his future wife, Juanita Dahmer. They married September 18, 1951. She died October 5, 2020.

He is survived by his three daughters, Susan Clark (Columbia), Kathryn Rogers (Warrensburg) and Christen Woodrel (Atlanta, GA) and his nephew, Bob Woodrel as well as his grandson Thomas (Kristen) Richards and great grandsons Nicholas Richards and Darian Wayland. He was a wonderful, loving grandfather with a great sense of humor.

He was a Life Member of the American Legion - VFW, Past Master of the Masonic Corinthian Lodge of Warrensburg, Past President of the Warrensburg Kiwanis Club, member of Scottish Rite, Community Chorus and First United Methodist Church. After he retired he enjoyed volunteering at the VA snack bar, Meals on Wheels and as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

He and Nita loved living in Warrensburg, supporting their community and socializing with their friends and family. After retirement Ed and Nita devoted much time to fishing, camping and traveling. They especially loved taking their fifth wheel to Texas to spend the winter away from the snow and cold. In nicer weather they enjoyed local trips with their camping group, The Ramblers.

As he reached the age of 96 and managed to outlive many of his friends and family, he asked that there be no visitation or funeral and instead there be only a graveside service. That will take place 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 30 th at the Bates City Cemetery. Rather than flowers or plants, those who wish to do something in memory of Ed can donate to Warrensburg Veterans Home.
