Obituary

Donald G. Schawo, 69, of Warrensburg, Missouri, passed away peacefully Monday, August 10, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Don was born March 8, 1951 in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of James "Harold" Schawo and Mildred (Chapman) Schawo.  He graduated from Polo High School.  In 1975, he moved to Warrensburg and attended Central Missouri State University.  Don was united in marriage to Jan McNarie on December 15, 1976, near Hamilton, Missouri.  He was a carpenter at UCM for 38 years.  Don was a devoted 23-year member of the Optimist Club of Warrensburg, and also served as Assistant Scout Master of Troup 400 and district trainer for Lone Bear District for several years.  Don loved all things outdoors—travelling to several National Parks in the west and southwest for hiking, hot air ballooning and history, notably Native American Cultures.

Even though in his last weeks and days he was robbed of his strength, stamina, and eventually most of his cognition…an occasional glimmer of his famous sense of humor would suddenly shine. His quick wit would pop out often when least expected causing everyone around; nurses, friends and family alike to often laugh out loud, even literally to the last hour of his life.

While his amazing sense of humor and his master skills as a carpenter and woodworker were profound, it was his love of helping others that made him such a great man. Community service was very important to him.   He never met a stranger and always gave his ever present smile and a kind word that made someone else's day better.

While his pain is finally gone and he is truely at peace, many of us will now find a small empty spot in our hearts that was filled every time we heard him chuckle.  We may miss that the most.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; son William "Bill" Schawo and wife, Cari; two grandchildren: Riley and Hailianne and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: David and two sisters: Mary Sue and Patricia.

A very small private ceremony will  be held now, with a larger Celebration of Life when times are less perilous

Instead of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Luke's Cancer Institute, or the Optimist International Foundation.

Arrangements entrusted to Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg.
