Obituary

Donald (Don) Leslie Murphy, MS, CPOT, USAF MSgt, 61 of Camdenton, Missouri passed away Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024 at the Harry S. Truman Veterans' Hospital in Columbia.

Don was born July 10, 1962 in Warrensburg, Missouri, son of Donald D. and Mary Anna (Everts) Murphy.

Don exhibited a thirst for knowledge and modeled the wonder of knowing. A lifelong learner, he earned his Masters in Logistics Management, just a thesis shy of his Doctorate, from Reddings University. His quest for knowledge continued and he eventually became a certified Paraoptometric Technician and Ophthalmic Technician. Never missing an opportunity to change someone's life, Don taught Human and Ocular Anatomy & Physiology, and Public Speaking for the Warrensburg School District and was often a guest instructor for The University of Central Missouri. He also provided Lensometry and Prism, Ocular Anatomy, and CPOA and CPOT Review workshops and courses for the Missouri Optometric Association.

He truly loved his country and served in multiple capacities.  Don enlisted in The United States Navy in 1980 at the age of 17, assigned to The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier as a Fuels Craftsman stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. It was here that he met and married the love of his life, Suzan Holmes in 1983. After his initial enlistment was completed, the yearning to serve his country in another capacity led to his enlistment in The United States Army. Don fought gallantly with the 75th Ranger Batallion in Desert Storm. Although he was too humble to acknowledge it, this is where he was awarded The Purple Heart. Upon discharge, his love of country led to his final service in The United States Air Force with the 442nd Medical Squadron at Whiteman Air Force Base culminating in his retirement after 36 years of service.

Although too numerous to list, some of his major accomodations include Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distinguished Presidental Unit Citation, Navy Presidental Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2 oak leaf clusters, Navy Battle Efficiency Ribbon, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, and National Defense Service Medal with 1 service star.

His greatest accomplishment however, was his family, whom he loved fiercely. He and Suzan retired to Camdenton where they enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren at their new lake house.  He enjoyed taking them along the lake, bouncing from one cove to another in search of the best live music and food in the area, motorcycle rides through country backroads, family barbecues and celebrations; all the while making sure those involved, new and old, felt welcome and loved.

Ultimately, Don was the definition of selfless.  He cherished those closest to him and never knew a stranger.  He would often help those around him with various home projects, landscaping, and mechanical help, or simply lend an ear to a troubled heart or mind. He was a lover of Jesus, a devout servant of the Lord, and lived his life in His image.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years: Suzan Murphy; son: Donald John Murphy; daughter: Brandi Mannering (Ryan Windle); grandchildren: Camden Mannering; Cooper Mannering; Natalie Windle; Jacob Windle; Aaden Murphy; Layla Murphy; sisters: Pamela Poe (James); Mellany Solsberry (Stacy); Lonya Puffer (Charles); Angi Minner (Kurt); brother: Cary Murphy (Tammy); and stepmother: Joyce Murphy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald D. Murphy and Mary Anna Murphy.
