Dennis Wayne
Jones
May 21, 1940 — Mar 9, 2025
Dennis Wayne Jones, 84, passed peacefully on March 9, 2025, surrounded by love and, we assume, a cup of coffee.
Born to Martha Bishop and Lewis Jones, Dennis was the oldest of five boys—a title he wore with pride (and occasionally with the exasperation of a built-in babysitter). If you asked Dennis about his greatest accomplishment, he wouldn't mention his time in the National Guard or his ability to name every warplane ever built—he'd say, without hesitation, his three children.
Dennis never met a stranger. A "quick" trip to the grocery store with him was never quick, as he saw every encounter as an opportunity to chat, connect, and remind someone how much they mattered. His superpower was making people feel seen, and if you bagged his groceries, well, you probably got a heartfelt thank-you speech worthy of an award.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Katie Jones; his parents; his brother Brad; and, of course, his childhood dog (because that dog had to be mentioned). He leaves behind his children, Amanda McKeehan (Bob McKeehan), Gabe Jones (Dayna Jones), and Kassie Dewitt (Chris Dewitt); 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way; his brothers William, Greg, and Scott Jones and extended family and friends.
Known affectionately as "Sweetie Jones," Dennis was his children's biggest fan, cheerleader, and the voice of reason (or rebellion, depending on the situation). He never missed a chance to remind them how proud he was—even if that meant sitting through sports games (which he tolerated solely for the love of his grandkids). His quirks were legendary: a trail of jelly in the kitchen, a strict 45 mph speed limit (regardless of the actual limit), and an undying belief that coffee counted as hydration.
Dennis was always up for a road trip with his son he was so proud of, a dance with his daughters, or breaking a rule or two (because rules were suggestions in his book). He loved deeply, laughed often, and left an undeniable mark on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His smile was nearly a lethal weapon—infectious, bright, and capable of turning any bad day around.
The sadness of his loss is only matched by the joy of having known him. His family will carry on his legacy of love, humor, and the firm belief that life's best moments happen in the little, everyday connections.
"Life's too short to drink bad coffee, follow all the rules, or pass up a good conversation."
Services will be held at Heartland Baptist Church in Knob Noster, MO from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2025. In lieu of flowers, strike up a conversation with a stranger in his honor—Dennis would love that.
Arrangements entrusted to Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg.
