Obituary

Dr. David Carl Sundberg, 80, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday, March 12 at his home in Warrensburg, Missouri.  David was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 16, 1938, the son of David and Florence Sundberg.  He graduated from Smithtown High School, New York and then attended Farmingdale State College on Long Island where he graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry. David served in the US Army as an Intelligence Officer stationed for most of his duty in Germany.  Upon returning home, he achieved his undergraduate degree in German and Slavic Languages from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  David then worked as an Assistant Dean of Students at Stony Brook University.  While at Stony Brook, David met his wife of over 50 years, Sue Ellen Tuttle.  They were married in 1968 at Cold Spring Harbor Episcopal Church and honeymooned traveling throughout Europe.

David and Sue moved to Columbia, Missouri where both attended graduate school at the University of Missouri, Columbia.  David earned his PhD in Counseling Psychology while also working as a counselor in the University's residence halls.  Kendra, their first child was born at Boone County Hospital on April 28, 1974.  The family moved to Maryville, Missouri in August of that same year where David accepted the position of Director of the Counseling Center at Northwest Missouri State University.  He would hold this position for 15 years during which time he made many lifelong friendships and positively impacted the lives of countless students.  Son David Carl was born September 9, 1975 at St. Francis Hospital.

The family moved in 1989 to Warrensburg, Missouri where David assumed a new role as Program Coordinator of the College Student Personnel Administration Master of Science degree program.  Over the course of 15 years Dr. Sundberg prepared students to excel in future careers in student life, student services and student development as well as readied them for success in doctoral programs.

In addition to the pursuit of higher education, David was passionate about raising and nurturing his children as well as his children's children, gardening, reading, listening to classical music, traveling, collecting, and sharing his fondness for learning.  In later years, David shared the bounty of his expansive garden with friends, neighbors and the Warrensburg Food Center.

David is survived by his devoted wife Sue, his two children, Kendra and David, two grandchildren Forrest Homoly and Una Sundberg, his sisters Florence Sundberg, Elaine Benaberger, Nancy Cammarota and Lynne Diamond.  He was preceded in death by father David, mother Florence, and brother Steven.
