Life Legacy
Dr. Gerald D. “Jerry” Kangas, 67 of Warrensburg, Missouri passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at his home with his wife and two daughters at his bedside.
What the following facts fail to convey is what an incredibly wonderful man Jerry Kangas was. They cannot possibly begin to describe the profound impact he had on all he knew and loved. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, friend, and educator. He was well respected and admired and he was deeply loved.
Jerry was born October 21, 1944 in Litchfield, Minnesota, son of Roy C. and Marian C. (Peterson) Kangas. He was a 1963 graduate of Mitchell High School in Mitchell, South Dakota. He earned his BA-Communication degree in 1971 with the Charter class from Southwest Minnesota State College, Marshall, MN. He went on to earn his MS-Communication degree in 1972 from Murray State University, Murray, KY. In 1994 he completed his Master of Technology degree with Arizona State University, Mesa, AZ. In 1997 he earned an Education Specialist, Educational Administration degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, MO. He earned his Doctor of Education degree in 2003 from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK.
He was an engineer with AMPEX Corporation where he met his wife Fran in Dallas. Jerry was united in marriage to Fran Becker on December 30, 1978 in Mitchell, SD. In 1979, he was an engineer with the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, SD. Shortly thereafter, he co-owned and operated K & E Implement in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. Jerry was an associate professor at Southwest State University in Marshall, MN from 1981 until 1995, and served as department chairperson for part of that time. He and Fran moved to Warrensburg where he continued his teaching career as associate professor of electronic technology at University of Central Missouri. He served as Faculty Senate Vice President from 2008 to 2010 and program coordinator. He was a 15 year member of the SkillsUSA advisor team, actively involved with the student yearly competition. He was an active member in the development of the Cisco Networking Academy for UCMO. He was a member of American Society for Engineering Education. He retired in 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Fran; two daughters: Suzanne Stokke and husband, Darin of Ft. Myers, FL and Kathryn Carney and husband, Michael of Golden, CO; five grandchildren: Cameron Duthoy, Luke Stokke, Hannah Stokke, Raygan Stokke and Abalone “Abby” Carney; two sisters: Ramona Erickson and husband, Peter of Plankinton, SD and Kristie Musick and husband, Rick of Houston, TX; three brothers: John Kangas and wife, Shirley of Phillip, SD; Gail Kangas and wife, Faye of Rapid City, SD and Glenn Kangas and wife, Marles of Erskine, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents.
Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg is in charge of arrangements.
