Life Legacy
On a spectacularly beautiful summer evening at twilight, surrounded by the family she so dearly loved in her peaceful country home in Knob Noster, Missouri, Joyce lost her short battle with the ravages of cancer on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
She began her 60 years of life as a surprise Christmas present on December 23, 1951, in Kansas City, Missouri, the second daughter of Walter L. and Delores R. (Staab) Shay. Following her graduation from Bishop Hogan High School, she attended and graduated from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, proudly receiving a bachelor of science in mathematics in 1974. She married her college sweetheart, Thomas H. Kolkmeier, on November 9 of the same year. Joyce received a master’s degree in education from the University of Central Missouri in May, 1991. She continued her commitment to education by further becoming an adjunct faculty member teaching mathematics at UCM and State Fair Community College.
Passionately dedicated to creating the perfect home for her family, Joyce devoted her time to raising her four children and took pride in their achievements in academics, sports, and scouting. Joyce will be best remembered for her amazing creative imagination being an arts and crafts genius, teaching all how to make something out of nothing; her incredible green thumb ability as evidenced by the myriad of plants, flowers, and roses that thrive in her beautiful garden; and her determination to always make the best out of any situation remaining compassionate and tender-hearted. She loved to cook and sew, particularly decorating her home with delicately created handiwork. She delighted in following the progress (or not) of her favorite Chiefs and Royals. Holidays and birthdays were always celebrated complete with all the trimmings and much fanfare. While the Fourth of July will be remembered as one of her favorite holidays, Joyce went to great extremes to share her childhood traditions with her children and grandchildren. Sharing time with her family and playing with her grandchildren were her greatest joys in life.
Those who will miss her dearly include her four children, Melissa Barton and husband, Justin, Nathan Kolkmeier, Justin Kolkmeier and wife, Rebecca, and Autumn Kolkmeier; her three beloved grandchildren, Emma, Sarah, and Ryan Barton; her siblings, Jane Shay, Jeanette Cummings, Stephen Shay, and Julie Hughes; and several nieces and nephews.
Flowers may be sent to Williams Funeral Chapel, 1400 South Maguire, Warrensburg, Missouri 64093. Donations can be made in Joyce’s memory at pancan.org or to Odyssey Hospice of Greater Kansas City at 4911 South Arrowhead Drive, Suite 310, Independence, Missouri 64055.
A remembrance gathering for close friends and family will be held at the Kolkmeier residence from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 16th.
